Learn How to Memorize Quickly

Right since we are born, we are in a continuous process of learning. Our memory takes up the responsibility of storing everything we learn, thus increasing our knowledge. However, there is a difference between how much we learn, and how much of it we actually remember.
Our memory is like a library of information. But does it really store all the information?  It is said that most of the information we come across, gets stored in our memory bank, that is our subconscious mind. Most of us are unable to recall what we knew. On the other hand, some of our genius mates are very quick with memorizing things and recalling them.
Some of us keep forgetting things every now and then. Some of us remember things only after reading them multiple times. Some can store information by associating its contents with images, while others memorize things at first sight or in a single read. That depends on one's memory capacity and the techniques used for memorizing.
In today's fast-paced life, most of us are overloaded with professional and personal commitments. Being in the midst of handling a number of things simultaneously, we discover that we are getting forgetful by the day.
Sometimes we are unable to find our keys, at other times we forget to send an important e-mail to a client. When such instances become a regular thing, it is time to take memory improvement seriously. Given here are a few ways to improve memory and memorize things quicker.

Exercise You Brain

Spending about an hour solving puzzles, Sudoku, and crosswords, can serve as an excellent exercise for the brain. Computer brain games and memory games are of good help. These exercises keep the brain alert and active. Grasping information becomes easier.

Take Interest and Enjoy What You Learn

Ever wondered why you remember all the rules of your favorite sport or how you know all the dialogs of your favorite movie by heart? That's because you take interest and enjoy those things. Interest in the subject gives you a better understanding of it.
If you are interested in the topic you are studying and are curious to know something new about it, you will be able to memorize it better. Take interest in the topic at hand and remembering the associated information will be easier.

Be Attentive and Understand

If you don't understand what you are reading, seeing, or listening to, you will never be able to remember it. It is very important to know what you are studying, rather than memorizing it without understanding.
Listen carefully to what is being said, by being attentive while reading or listening to it. Once your concepts are clear, and when you have a clear understanding of the subject, the chances of forgetting what you have learned are very less.

Talk about It

One of the best ways to memorize something quickly is to talk about it and use it in conversations. When you talk about something with others, the brain starts relating it with the things being discussed.
It associates the information to be memorized with the contents of the conversation. This helps the brain retain the acquired information for a longer time. Also, sharing the information with someone else is a revision of what you have learned.

Break Down and Correlate

Split the information into 3 to 4 parts, or more, depending on its size. Once you have broken it down, try to correlate it with something which is already a part of your long-term memory. Try to retain it in bits. This is one of the most effective tips to memorize quickly.
This will avoid confusion and cramping of information in the brain. Studies have stated that students who study on a daily basis (regularly) tend to remember more than what students who practice last-minute study do.

Use Flash Cards

To memorize quickly for an exam, using flash cards is a good option. For example, if you are trying to memorize definitions, you can write the definition on one side of the card and the term on the other side.
You can carry these flash cards wherever you want and read them. Even if you have a few minutes to spare, you can go through any of the cards in the stack. This is one of the most fun and interesting ways for students to memorize quickly.

Enhance Focus and Concentration

Improve your focus and concentration as it helps in memorizing better. Everyday, try to recall what you learned in class or the work you did in office. Try to remember each and every detail about it.
The habit of recalling the day's events every evening helps improve memory. Play games that help improve concentration. Meditation and yoga help improve focus and increase concentration.

Prepare Mental Images

Mental visualization is a technique to improve memory. You can memorize symptoms of a disease by preparing a mental image of a person, experiencing it you will be able to retain the information.


The best way to remember something is by repeating it to yourself. Keep repeating the information aloud, so that it is reinforced in your brain. Psychologists refer to this type of learning as 'over learning'. It does help.

Organize Information

Information written down on paper is always easier to study in comparison to messed up information. The brain grasps such information quicker. So, if the information is not in order, jot it down in points.
A small tip to remember a list of points is to study it in the 1, 1-2, 1-2-3, pattern. For example; say 'cat, dog and owl' are three words that you need to memorize. Repeating these words in the above pattern like; cat, cat-dog, cat-dog-owl, and so on, will help you learn and remember them.

Sing Along

Choose the tune of your favorite song or just any tune and try to give it to the information that you wish to memorize. This works in case of chemical or mathematical equations and formulae.
You could also try rhyming the information or reciting it like a poem. With a rhyme or a tune associated with them, things become easier to learn and are retained with ease.

Do it Your Way

Learn in the way you are comfortable with. Do not imitate a smarty or a friend's way of learning. They may be comfortable learning it that way, whereas your way of grasping things may be entirely different.
For example, some like mugging up, while some prefer making notes. Some may recite it softly while some prefer reading aloud. Find which way suits you best.

Follow a Healthy Diet

Diet plays an important role in maintaining overall health. Examples of foods that improve memory include fish and salmon which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fortified whole grain cereals which are a rich source of vitamin B.
Also foods that help in memory are almonds, milk and eggs, and iron-rich foods such as broccoli, grapes, papayas, cranberries, strawberries, beets, spinach, dark leafy vegetables, lentils, tuna, tomatoes, plums, grapes, orange juice, avocados, soy beans, and sweet potatoes. Include them in your diet.
Form a habit of making a to-do list every morning. You could apply that to your household chores, homework, or office work. Enlisting your tasks and striking them off as and when they are completed, is a good way to ensure that your forgetfulness does not affect your efficiency at work.
