Tips on How to Organize Yourself and Be Productive

Aigerim Berzinya
It seems like you control time, but still get late to meetings with your friends, colleagues and family. Here are some tips to be followed to make your life more organized and less stressful.

Oh, no! You’re again late for work.

Your boss is getting pissed off, your co-workers are about to have an intervention, and you already know it’s going to happen again tomorrow.

If you’re tired of finding yourself late for literally anything and everything, it’s time to get your life on track. Here are the top 6 ways to ALWAYS be on time, you’ll never miss a single beat again.

Set Your Alarm Clock

This may seem like a no-brainer, but to the person who is consistently late, they may forget that the alarm clock even exists.

Listen: I don’t care if you’re using an old school alarm clock on your nightstand by the bed or have an iPhone by your ear on your pillow; the fact of the matter is, you need something with an alarm clock.
But don’t just set your alarm clock to wake you up 30 minutes before you’re supposed to be at work. (And by the way, never hit the snooze button - it’s a trap).

Instead, try setting it for at least an hour before work. This gives you time to get ready, eat breakfast, and drive over, arriving on time.

Set Reminders

Work isn’t the only thing in life you can be late for...
There are special occasions, gym, classes, school - you name it! That being said, it’s important to set reminders.

Set up reminders on your phone’s calendars - you can set a variety of reminders for a single event, such as reminding you the day before, the day of, and an hour before it begins.
If you’re an old school, then there are options for you as well. You might want to consider having a personal planner that you carry around, adding events into your handheld calendar as soon as you hear about them.

Try tossing sticky notes on your fridge, front door, or anywhere else you’re likely to see them.

Leave Earlier

Things happen! There may be an accident, you hit every single red light on your way to the event, or you got pulled over for going just a ‘little bit’ too fast.

Whatever the case may be, things can certainly come up on your way over to a special occasion or work. That being said, make sure you give yourself some ‘buffer time’ during your routine.
If you need to be at your cousin’s birthday party at 11:00 AM this Saturday, and you know it takes exactly 14 minutes to get there, you'd probably leave 25 minutes ahead of time.

This ensures you’re going to get there right on time; so even if you do find yourself harassed by those big ugly red stop lights time after time, it won’t affect your arrival time.

Remove Distractions

In this day and age, life is all about distractions! We want to watch five more minutes of our favorite television series, check Facebook feeds just one more time, or check our messages to see if that certain someone finally text back.

But all these distractions can wreak havoc on your arrival time!
When you’re planning on leaving, let it be just that. Forget any distractions. Facebook can wait until you’ve arrived at your destination, that text message will still be on your notification list, and that show will be on your DVR waiting for you when you get home.

Removing distractions from your life will result in being on time way more often!

Get Ready the Night Before

There are so much to do! Get dressed, fix your hair, take a shower (maybe), make breakfast, get the kids ready, get everyone piled into the car, and then when that is all said and done - of course, you left your cell phone sitting on the dresser and you have to turn around to get it.
Want to avoid morning struggles and lateness? Get ready the night before!

This is truly one of the best ways to ensure there are no complications in the morning, giving you a smooth routine that leads to you - and everyone else you may be carting around- arriving where they need to be on time.
What can you do the night before?
  • Take a bath the night before, so you don’t need to worry about it in the morning.
  • Set out clothes for you and everyone else.
  • Make sure the house is in order before you fall asleep, so it doesn’t overwhelm you in the morning- things like picking up the living room, doing the dishes, and taking the trash out are all great ideas.
  • Make lunch the night before - FOR SURE. This helps a ton as you can grab it out of the fridge and be on your way.
  • Lastly, make breakfast the night before or choose an ‘overnight breakfast recipe’ like a crockpot breakfast or overnight oats. You can also make homemade burritos, sandwiches, and so much more that can be zapped in the morning with ease.

Set the Clocks Ahead

A little trick that helps me out is setting my clocks ahead of time - but make sure every clock is different, while still being ahead. This kind of gives you some extra ‘buffer time’.

It sounds ridiculous, but it seriously works; and you will feel so awesome when you arrive ‘late’ but you’re really right on time. Whatever works!
There are plenty of simple solutions for your problems. By setting up alarms, reminders, and getting ready the night before, you can finally arrive everywhere you need to be on time.
